How to Buy Groceries with Bitcoin Using Gift Cards
The practical route is to buy a supermarket or retail gift card with Bitcoin, then redeem that card with the merchant. The gift card is the payment bridge; this does not mean the supermarket accepts Bitcoin at its own checkout.
From Bitcoin to a grocery card in five steps
- Choose the shopping missionDecide whether the recipient needs a supermarket card, broad retail card or prepared-food service. This guide is for groceries or everyday retail.
- Match the merchant and countryUse a US product for a US shop, a UK product for a UK shop and a Canadian product for a Canadian shop. A familiar brand name does not remove the market restriction.
- Select a face valueThe card’s USD, GBP or CAD amount is the value the recipient uses. Your preferred display currency is only a storefront estimate.
- Request the Bitcoin amountAt checkout, select BTC on Bitcoin and use the exact payment amount created for the 60-minute request. Wallet and network fees remain separate.
- Wait for confirmation and use the cardGiftoshi states that gift-card codes are delivered within two minutes after payment confirmation. Follow the merchant’s redemption instructions and exclusions when spending the balance.

The three ladders are catalogue facts, not an exchange-rate comparison. USD 50, GBP 50 and CAD 50 are different face values even when the number is the same.
Why the Tesco use case needs an extra check
Tesco says its UK gift cards can pay for items in Tesco stores and at Tesco Cafés that accept cash. It excludes online grocery shopping, third-party gift cards, lottery purchases, Esso fuel, non-Tesco photo labs and its phones website. Corporate Tesco gift cards also cannot pay for fuel.
That makes Tesco a concrete answer for a UK in-person grocery mission, but a poor fit when the goal is online delivery or fuel. Choose the redemption channel before sending Bitcoin for the card.
Questions before paying
Does Tesco accept Bitcoin?
This guide does not claim that. Bitcoin pays Giftoshi for a Tesco gift card; the recipient then uses the gift card under Tesco’s rules.
Can I choose BTC Lightning?
No. Giftoshi supports native BTC on Bitcoin, not Lightning. Use the exact asset and network pair displayed in the payment request.
Does the display currency change the gift card?
No. It changes the comparison estimate only. A GBP Tesco card remains denominated in GBP.
Which card should I start with?
For an eligible UK in-store grocery shop, start with Tesco. For US retail, review Target eGift; for a Canadian supermarket recipient, review Sobeys.
