Can You Use an In-Store Gift Card Online?
There is no universal rule. Tesco’s UK gift card excludes online grocery shopping, eligible Nike cards can be used online in listed European markets including France, and Sephora’s US/Canada gift cards work online while store merchandise credit is store-only.
Online, app and store rules are brand-specific
| Program | Online or app | In store | Before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesco UK gift card | Online grocery shopping is excluded | Tesco stores and Tesco Cafés that accept cash | Use it for an eligible in-person purchase, not a Tesco online grocery order |
| Eligible Nike card in France | Nike says cards bought on Nike.com or in the Nike App can be used online in listed European markets, including France | Participating Nike stores only | Verify the card type, market and individual store |
| Sephora US/Canada gift card or eGift Card | US and Canada sites and app | Participating US/Canada Sephora stores and Sephora at Kohl’s | Keep the US/Canada scope; these rules do not describe France |
| Sephora store merchandise credit | Not accepted online under the US/Canada guidance | Store-only | Do not confuse merchandise credit with a gift card or eGift Card |
Ask what the value product actually is
A brand may issue physical gift cards, emailed eGift Cards and store merchandise credits under similar names. The delivery format alone does not settle redemption. Sephora’s US/Canada program lets physical gift cards and eGift Cards work across its listed online, app and store channels, while merchandise credit stays in store.
Reload rules can differ too: Sephora says eligible physical cards can be reloaded only in a Sephora store, while eGift Cards, authorized-retailer gift cards and merchandise credits cannot be reloaded. That distinction matters after the first purchase, but it does not change which digital product this storefront lists.
Match the card to the intended checkout
The Tesco gift card is the wrong route because Tesco excludes online grocery shopping. Choose another product or payment route.
An eligible Nike card may work online under Nike France’s listed-market rules. Confirm the exact product and France market before buying.
A Sephora US/Canada gift card or eGift Card fits the published channel. Store merchandise credit does not.
Questions buyers ask
Does “eGift” always mean online redemption?
No universal rule follows from the label. Check the merchant’s channels for that product and country.
Can a Tesco UK gift card pay for online groceries?
No. Tesco lists online grocery shopping as an excluded use.
Can any Nike gift card be used at any Nike store?
No. Nike limits store use to participating stores, and online coverage depends on the eligible card and listed market.
Are Sephora merchandise credit and an eGift Card the same?
No. Under the US/Canada guidance, merchandise credit is store-only while an eGift Card works in the listed digital and store channels.

Next step
Write down the intended country and checkout channel, then choose a product whose official rules cover both. For a UK Tesco store visit, use the Tesco product; for an online purchase, follow the exact merchant program instead of assuming the store card carries over.
